These 4 paintings at Hadfield Fine Art Spring Exhibition February 2024

Jugadores de Cartas  (card players)

These three paintings are a snapshot moment in Cuba of card players amongst electric overhead cables and beautiful scenery. Card playing provides so much social cohesion. Although I don’t play cards myself when I was 14 I had a weekend job in a bridge club serving tea and cleaning the used ashtrays with disinfectant and linseed oil. The atmosphere In the club was thick with smoke. I loved to watch the antics of the card players which was often mediated by the owner, a tiny lady trying to keep the peace and quieten the fiery disputes which erupted. Cezanne would have loved these scenarios and maybe painted another series!

The conversation Painting

This painting was initially inspired by an amazing prescient short Story by E.M Forster. ‘The Machine Stops’, written over a century ago In 1909. Will Gomperz in his review (Guardian May 29th 2020) wrote”it is not simply prescient it is jaw dropping,” “a breathtakingly accurate literary description of lockdown life in 2020 .”Forster describes a world where Skype like communication and social media fulfils all human needs, providing access to food, medical requirements, entertainment, and social interaction. The machine is a vast video-conferencing network for the exchange of second-hand ideas. My paintings are a visual interpretation on the limitations of text messaging, Zoom and Face-time.

Post lockdown I have been experimenting with self portraits, using collage, and charcoal drawings. Screens and masks seem to feature subconsciously

April-June 2020

During this lockdown period I have been working on 3 paintings called Pavilion from my photos and memories of Sri Lanka. As Pavilions are often open structures built for pleasure and recreation I thought this may be particularly relevant to our times when fresh air is so important.

Covid 19 my lockdown drawings

A public pathway runs along the back of my elevated back garden. The footfall during this passage of time has been unprecedented. I have created a pencil line drawing a day in a Jackson’s Lay flat sketch book ( a joy to use) of people passing by, with snippets of conversation and some thoughts of my own. This should make interesting viewing in years to come . People on mobile phones (and there are many) have a particular stance and the social distancing groups have been both amusing and interesting.
